Plans submitted for £140m housing development in North Shields

A total of 800 new homes could be built at a former historic shipbuilding site on Tyneside, it has been revealed.

Social housing developer People for Places has submitted plans to North Tyneside Council to build a £140 million waterside housing development at Smith's Dock in North Shields.

The proposals also include the creation of a waterfront park, shops and cafes.

Nigel Brewer, project director at Places for People, claimed the application marks an "important new phase" in the history of Smith's Dock, which first opened in 1851.

He said: "This is the start of its revival, where the site will once again become a destination for people to live, work and socialise.

"We are keen to get the economy moving. The economic benefits of this site will inevitably extend into the wider Tyneside region."

In 2007, Places for People bought the derelict site and has already invested £20 million to regenerate it.
