Plans for National Indoor Arena regeneration given go-ahead

The National Indoor Arena in Birmingham is set to be revamped after the local council gave the green light for the £20 million scheme.

Building owner The National Exhibition Centre has now begun its search for a contractor who will carry out the improvement works while ensuring that it continues to operate as an entertainment venue, reports Construction Enquirer.

The successful contractor will oversee the upgrade of the arena's facilities, including the creation of new public concourse levels to increase the number of available food and drink services.

Phil Mead, NEC Group Arenas managing director, said: "The aim of the redevelopment programme is to make the NIA more accessible, both visually and physically, taking advantage of its key canal-side location."

The venue's main bowl is not included in the refurbishment contract, which was formally put out to tender today (8th December). Construction firms have until 16th January to submit interest in the job.
