Plans for £80m museum conversion revealed

Plans to convert a Grade 2* listed building into the new home for the Design Museum have been revealed.

The £80 million project will see the renovation of the Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, west London, which has now been dormant for over a decade.

The interior design has been drawn up by John Pawson and OMA has planned the surrounding residential development.

It is hoped the new building will open in 2014 and host some 500,000 visitors per year – double the existing number.

The Design Museum is hoping to raise £44.7 million to fund the rebuild, of which it has already secured more than 60 per cent from individuals and trusts.

Speaking about the release of the plans, culture minister Ed Vaizey said: "The UK leads the world in design and architecture and it is entirely appropriate that we should be creating the world's greatest Design Museum at this iconic London landmark."
