Major redevelopments to one of the UK's busiest stations, Birmingham New Street, will be finished in 2012, Network Rail has announced.
The station handles some 1,000 trains and 140,000 passengers a day - more than double the design capacity – and the redesign includes a new footbridge providing access to all the platforms and a new concourse.
The work is being handled by Mace and the project director Chris Montgomery says that the location of the station has proven challenging.
"Undertaking projects on this scale in the heart of Birmingham city centre represents a huge logistical challenge and we planned the work carefully to minimise disruption to passengers and Christmas shoppers," he said.
Geoff Inskip, chief executive of the region’s transport authority Centro said that once finished, the station will be a "world class facility" and provide a boost to the community.
The final amendments to the station are scheduled for completion in 2015.
