More than 3,600 affordable homes could be built in the south over the next four years under plans from a housing association.
Sovereign Housing Association, which owns or manages more than 34,000 properties across the UK, has confirmed that 1,064 homes will be built in this financial year and has already contracted 865 of them.
A minimum of 276 of the new homes will be for affordable home ownership, with a similar proportion scheduled to be completed in 2013/14.
Phil Stephens, development and commercial director at the housing association, said: "The top priorities are to ensure that we deliver the HCA Affordable Homes Programme and play our part in achieving Sovereign's aim of reaching 50,000 homes by 2015."
The new developments will include a large proportion of shared ownership homes, in addition to market rent properties in key locations.
Last year, Sovereign built 957 new homes, up from the 622 it built in the previous year,
