New waste burning plant set to be built in Gloucestershire

A new incinerator is set to be built in Gloucestershire after the preferred bidders for the £500 million scheme were announced.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty and waste management company Urbaser will design, build and operate an energy-from-waste facility in Javelin Park in Gloucester.

The private public partnership project will be undertaken by a 30/70 joint venture between the two firms, with the latter set to operate the site following its expected completion in 2015.

It aims to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill and generate enough energy to power around 28,000 homes. Net CO2 emissions are expected to be cut by more than 20,000 tonnes per year.

Balfour Beatty chief executive, Ian Tyler, said: "We are delighted to have been selected as preferred bidder for this long-term contract in the growing energy-from-waste sector.

"The facility will improve Gloucestershire's waste infrastructure and make a major contribution to diverting more waste away from landfill."

Sustainability is a key aspect of the building, as it will utilise SUDS systems in the drainage design and aim to achieve BREEAM and CEEQUAL ratings of 'Very Good' and 'Excellent' respectively.
