New air traffic control tower on its way

Construction has just got underway on a new air traffic control (ATC) tower at Manchester airport.

When it is completed in 2013, the ATC centre will stand 60 metres high, the same height as the city's Wheel of Manchester, and will be the second tallest in the UK.

The new ATC will command 360-degree views over the entire airfield and will house a visual control room, plus an approach radar section and navigation, surveillance and communication equipment.

Andrew Harrison, Manchester Airport's managing director, says: "It is a large construction project for Manchester that will create new jobs and we are keen to show the benefits of the project to a wider audience across our region."

The £16 million project is being handled by construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall.

Its work is being captured by a time-lapse camera and the feed will be made available to the public so that they can monitor the progress of the project.
