The four finalists in the race for NCE/ACE Young Consultant of the
Year 2009 Award have today been revealed ahead of the NCE/ACE
Consultants of the Year lunch at Claridge’s on Friday 20 March.
BDP lighting director Laura Baylis (29), Lee Canning (34), a senior
engineer at Mouchel, Gareth Evans (29), a project manager with Mott
MacDonald and BDP director John Roycroft (34) make up the list,
described by Association for Consultancy and Engineering chief
executive Nelson Ogunshakin as “brimming with bright ideas and genuine
engineering talent”.
The Young Consultant of the Year Award recognises young excellence
and talent in the field of consultancy and engineering. Anyone under 35
providing consultancy services in the built and natural environment is
eligible to enter. The winner picks up a cash prize of £1000, the title
of Young Consultant of the Year 2009 and receives their prize at the
lunchtime event at Claridge’s in Mayfair.
In 2008, the award was won by building services engineer Sarah
Royse, of Inbuilt Ltd, whom judges described as “a true visionary”.
Former chair of the ACE Progress Network Royse was honoured for the
work she had done in promoting consultancy and engineering to a younger
audience.
Ogunshakin described the quest to walk away with the award in 2009
as “very close” and said the shortlist was a reflection on the rich
pool of innovation and capability available to the consultancy and
engineering sector in the UK. “This country is fortunate to be able to
call upon some incredibly pioneering and adept engineers. Even though
Laura, Lee, Gareth and John are eligible to enter this award by virtue
of their age, they have proved themselves to be accomplished engineers
in their own right and all deserve recognition”.
