NAEA puts forward high street housing plan

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has called on the government to convert vacant high street properties into homes.

It wants the government to consider the "aesthetic and economic benefits" of making use of the retail space across the UK that is lying dormant.

However, the NAEA added that any conversion from retail to residential should only take place if the circumstances are right.

Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA, said: "Such renovations are not simple undertakings.

"We advise that a thorough evaluation of the work involved is carried out beforehand to avoid additional cost burdens."

Considerations to be made include the cost of new build versus conversion, access to the property and whether the space in is close proximity to noisy venues such as bars.

The government recently commissioned 'Queen of Shops' Mary Portas to conduct a review of the state of the high street in the UK in order to address its decline in certain areas.
