Microgeneration needs government support says the business voice of engineering and consultancy, ACE

Issued: 15 September 2010

Micorgeneration needs government support says the business voice of engineering and consultancy, ACE.  The latest report by the business body looks at that the commercial viability of such technologies and concludes that this is limited given the infancy of the market.

The report says that capital costs are relatively high and are likely to remain so.  ACE makes the case that government policies need to reflect the infancy of the market, promote certainty and provide businesses with the incentives to innovate.  This will encourage investment by consumers.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: “If government wishes to see the take up of microgeneration then either the capital costs have to fall significantly or government and businesses must do more to support households in meeting the upfront cost of the capital investment.”

ACE goes on to say that regulations, building codes and standards also need to be designed in a way which leaves consumers feeling confident.  Systems need to be easy to install within existing property constraints, and have to be standardised and harmonised in a way which means that early adopters, newer units, and varying systems are as compatible as possible in the future.

ACE believes the coalition should continue to look at alternative funding mechanisms such as Tax Increment Financing (TIF’s), which may allow local communities to engage in communal microgeneration projects.
