The next mayor of London has been urged to "go Dutch" by cycling campaigners.
In a bid to reduce the number of cycling fatalities in the capital, the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) wants whoever wins the forthcoming mayoral election to "prioritise safe and convenient bike lanes" by adopting a Dutch-style approach to cycling.
Major redesigns of Parliament Square, the Olympic Park and Blackfriars have been drawn up by the LCC that include reductions in traffic lanes, wider cycle paths and cycle-specific road signals.
The LCC said there was a danger that London was lagging behind other nations in terms of city layout.
Chief executive of the LCC, Ashok Sinha, said: "There’s a real danger London will be left behind by other global cities such as New York, Paris and Amsterdam if the next mayor doesn't look beyond outdated solutions that always favour motor traffic over cyclists and pedestrians."
Current City Hall incumbent Boris Johnson announced today (February 10th) that 2,300 more 'Boris Bikes' and 4,800 extra docking points are being installed in London this year.
