London bridge redevelopment design proposals approved

Design proposals for a major redevelopment of London Bridge station have been approved by Southwark Council.

Part of the £6 billion Thameslink programme, the proposed redevelopment of the famous old station would involve creating a new platform layout, for more frequent train services and construction of Britain's largest station concourse to reduce congestion.

New entrances would also be created on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street to improve accessibility into the station while also providing passengers with better connections.

Network Rail chief executive David Higgins said: "London Bridge is one of the busiest stations in the country and this investment is vital for passengers who want more space, less congestion and better services.

"Our proposals will breathe life back into London’s oldest rail terminus and help build on the programme of regeneration along the South Bank and Bankside."

Non-disruptive preparatory work is expected to start in 2012, with major construction work commencing in the following year. A completion date of 2018 is currently pencilled in.
