London 2012 generates 40,000 construction jobs

The London 2012 Olympic Games generated 40,000 jobs in the construction sector, as ten per cent of those employees were previously out of work, it has been reported.

According to the Olympic Development Authority (ODA), almost 26,000 people were employed for five days or more between April 2008 and June 2011 as they prepared the Olympic venue for next summer’s Games, CNBC revealed.

Within that same timeframe, almost 14,000 people were employed in the construction of the athletes’ village, with ten per cent admitting they had previously been unemployed.

It seems the majority of workers constructing the athletes’ village were local as two-thirds came from London, while the split between Londoners and non-Londoners working on the Olympic Park was closer to a halfway split.

Moreover, priority was given to workers living in the participating boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham and Waltham Forests, as they were offered increased access to employment.

Meanwhile, Southwark Council recently approved a design proposal for a major redevelopment of London Bridge station.
