Letters call for high-speed rail link

Letters written to two national newspapers by business leaders call on the government to give high-speed rail the go-ahead as a matter of urgency.

A letter to the Telegraph, signed by tens of business figures, bemoans Britain's infrastructure rankings on a global scale, claiming that in terms of high-speed rail it is placed behind Morocco and Saudi Arabia.

"As business leaders and job-creators, we recognise that Britain's poor infrastructure is a major obstacle to our long-term growth," it says.

In a separate letter to the Guardian, union leaders say that the implementation of HS2 (the name given to the proposed high-speed rail link between London and the West Midlands) would create thousands of jobs.

"We welcome the thousands of construction and engineering jobs HS2 will immediately bring to the UK economy," it says.

There is, however, strong opposition from some parties towards the proposals, including the 'Stop HS2' campaign that is being run by volunteers from local action groups.
