  Infrastructure savings on track

The government has announced that it is on track to reduce the cost of delivering infrastructure in the UK by £2-3 billion a year by 2015.

Infrastructure UK's Infrastructure Cost Review programme was launched in March 2011 and the first annual report has identified projected savings of up to £1.5 billion.

Efficiencies include a projected £600 million saving on the 20 major projects being delivered through the Highways Agency's Managed Motorways and Trunk Road Improvement programme.

Commercial secretary to the Treasury Lord Sassoon said that the scheme is about creating value for UK taxpayers.

"Every pound saved through this … programme is a pound more that can be spent on new infrastructure for the UK," he said.

"What is particularly encouraging is that these savings are being delivered through close and fruitful co-operation between the public and private sectors."

Earlier this year, chancellor George Osborne announced in his Budget a number of measures to develop the UK's infrastructure.

Projects mentioned in his statement included the electrification of the Welsh Valley lines and a £56 million fund for the Bexhill to Hastings link road.
