The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is launching a crackdown on poor safety standards on construction sites across England.
Inspectors from the HSE will be visiting sites where refurbishment or repair works are being carried out as part of a month-long national initiative to reduce the number of accidents.
They will be observing how dangerous activities such as working at height are being carried out, as well as making sure that good order is being maintained.
In terms of "good order", the inspectors will be looking to ensure that sites are clean and tidy with clear access routes and that workers have access to good welfare facilities.
David Stewart, principal inspector for construction at the HSE in West and North Yorkshire, said: "We anticipate that that we will see examples of good practice - where employers are taking the right steps to protect their workers - and bad - where safety comes too far down the list of priorities."
In 2010/2011, there were 50 fatal injuries in construction with a rate of 2.4 deaths per 100,000 workers.
