The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has announced that it will be targeting construction sites in the West Midlands, Worcestershire and Warwickshire over the next three weeks to clamp down on unsafe scaffolding.
Between 2006 and 2011 there were three fatalities and 250 injuries involving scaffolding in the region and the HSE is keen to see these numbers fall.
As part of the inspection process focussing on smaller construction and refurbishment sites, the HSE will be checking to ensure that any work at height has been properly planned, safety measures are in place and the equipment is up to scratch and being used correctly by the workers.
"Scaffolding still poses a significant risk to those involved in its construction and dismantling as well as those who use it," explained principal inspector Jo Anderson.
"Inspectors will target sites where poor scaffolding is putting workers at risk and when necessary take enforcement action."
