More competition is required in the home insulation market, according to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
The competition watchdog issued the plea ahead of the start of the Green Deal Programme, which is set to commence in October.
It warned that the current market requires more manufacturers, with the present set up favouring a “very small number” that supply home insulation products.
The advice came as part of a new report by the OFT, which examined the current state of the market.
As part of its findings, the watchdog called for the introduction of a new body, designed to oversee the quality of work done under the Green Deal and to handle any potential complaints from homeowners.
Nisha Arora, OFT director of services, infrastructure and public markets, said: “The home insulation sector is now worth some £700 million and it is important that people receive good quality, well-installed insulation that makes their homes more energy efficient.”
The regulator is also keen to introduce product certification bodies to help speed up the process for manufacturers trying to develop new products.
