The UK's highest-ever compact crane has joined in the race to get the EU's tallest building finished in time for the Olympics.
The Shard in London will stand at 310m when it is finished and crane specialist GGR has just lifted a 6-tonne mini crane onto the 283 metre-high final floor deck of the structure in order to help lift glass panels, reports the Construction Enquirer.
This will allow the existing tower crane, the UK's highest at 317m, to concentrate on other tasks.
It is sitting on a platform attached to the outside of the building at floor 55 and has been lifting the 500 tonnes of steel required for the Shard's spire into place.
Irvine Sellar, chairman of developer Sellar Property Group, said: "The Shard is already making a positive impact on London's skyline.
"The spire will complement the design of the building and complete a truly stunning piece of architecture."
Other companies working on the build include the main contractor Mace, structural engineer WSP and steel contractor Severfield Rowan.
