Durham Police Authority has been given the green light to build new headquarters as part of a £15 million redevelopment project.
The authority has received planning permission from Durham County Council to build a new 5,600 square metre base in Aykley Heads, which is expected to be up and running from spring 2014.
As part of the plans, which will be mainly funded by the proceeds of the sale of the former headquarters, a total of 227 residential properties will be built on the site.
Peter Thompson, Durham Police Authority chairman, revealed that the new building will be more efficient to run and is expected to save £750,000 per year.
"These savings will help us maintain an effective policing service to the people of County Durham and Darlington," he said.
"In relation to house building on the existing headquarters site, this will also give a welcome boost to the construction industry and local economy. We expect the sale of the land to be used to fund the new headquarters."
Construction tendering specialist Glenigan has revealed that Bam, Miller, Kier, Graham and Henry Brothers are all vying to deliver the project.
