Govt urged to restart road building scheme

The government should restart a road building scheme in order to boost economic growth, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

The employers' organisation has urged chancellor George Osborne to introduce road-tolling in order to attract private investment and raise revenue for 24 roads schemes which have recently stalled.

Private finance could be used to widen the A14 from Rugby to Felixstowe and improve the A1 in the north-east, while the remaining projects would either be brought forward within the existing spending programme or restarted, the CBI claim.

CBI director general John Cridland said: "The government should introduce road-tolling and bring forward ten major road infrastructure projects, getting spades in the ground, improving congestion and creating new jobs."

The CBI has downgraded its forecast on economic growth next year, with the body now expecting gross domestic product to increase by 0.9 per cent this year and 1.2 per cent in 2012, down from its previous projections of 1.3 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively.
