The government has pledged to give £500 million to private developers to help them re-start stalled building projects.
A number of developments have had to stop in recent months due to problems with road access, contaminated land and flood risks and ministers hope the new Growing Places fund will reenergise these projects.
Local enterprise partnerships, which are tasked with stimulating economic growth in their area, will be able to apply for the funds before distributing them among developers.
Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander told the BBC: "We're making available £500 million of public money to pay for that up front, so the developer can get on and invest billions of pounds more in building houses and employing people - in getting Britain building again.
"Then when the development is built and sold they can repay us the money and it can be used again to support another such development."
The money will be distributed across the country, with Liverpool developers set to receive £12.9 million, while those in Leeds and London will get £23.9 million and around £40 million respectively.
