Govt approves mixed-use development in Leicester

Wilson Bowden has been granted planning permission from the government to build a new 30 hectare mixed-use development in Leicester.

The new project, located at Glenfield Park, will feature 80,000 sq ft of office, 1.1m sq ft of warehousing and industrial units and 250 new family homes.

The surrounding outdoor area will also be refurbished to include a children's play area and allotments, while improvements will be made to roads, footpaths and cycleways.

It is expected to create 2,500 jobs in the city and the nearby area over the next ten years.

Following an initial refusal by Blaby District Council, communities secretary Eric Pickles approved the scheme after claiming the potential employment and housing benefits outweighed local opposition to the project.

Martin Traynor, chief executive of the Leicestershire Chamber said: "In Leicester and Leicestershire we are desperately short of good quality employment land in key locations.

"Opening up sites such as Glenfield Park will attract new businesses to the area and provide new space for local companies looking to expand."
