Prime minister David Cameron has said the government will explore the pros and cons of the airport plan for the Thames Estuary nicknamed 'Boris Island'.
The plans are so-called because they have been championed by current mayoral incumbent Boris Johnson who says that demand for international travel means that a new airport must be built.
In a speech delivered at the Institute of Civil Engineering yesterday (March 19th), the prime minister said that although the plans are "controversial", the government will consider them.
"We'll be bringing forward options in our aviation strategy which will include an examination of the pros and cons of a new airport in the Thames estuary," he told the delegation.
As the prime minister alluded, any such development would be met with huge resistance from environmental campaigners.
Kent County Council leader Paul Carter said Boris Island was a bad idea both "environmentally and ecologically" and that it would be "horrendous".
