Government aims to 'get Britain building'

The government today (February 1st) announced plans to "get Britain building".

Housing minister Grant Shapps said that the government is working with nine government departments and organisations including the BBC, Network Rail and the Royal Mail to identify and release enough unused land and buildings to create 100,000 new homes by 2015.

The government has pledged millions in funding to new home schemes, including £432 million in cash bonuses for 353 councils that have built new homes or have brought back into use empty properties.

Commenting on the plans, Mr Shapps said: "I'm pulling out all the stops for those who want to get on the property ladder.

"From March, the NewBuy Guarantee scheme will be on hand to help people buying newly built properties."

Recent figures from RBS revealed that it has become increasingly hard to get onto the property ladder.

Its 'Ability to Buy Index' has deteriorated for three consecutive quarters, with the rising cost of living outweighing the effects of falling house prices and rising incomes.
