Nearly 1,500 affordable homes are set to be built under the latest phase of the government's Affordable Homes Programme (AHP).
Housebuilder Galliford Try Homes has signed the largest private sector developer contract with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to date as part of the AHP.
The firm will be provided with a total of £17 million to build just under 1,500 homes before handing them over to its housing association partner.
Galliford Try Homes is the third private company to sign a deal as part of the scheme, with HCA forecasting that around six per cent of the £1.8 billion funding available through the programme will go to private developers.
A spokesman from the HCA said: "It enables smaller registered providers or those that can't form a consortium another route to access funding and maximises the delivery of new affordable homes.
"It demonstrates the good work and benefits of linking public and private sector organisations to increase the supply of new homes."
More than £1 billion has now been allocated to housing associations and housebuilders as the government seeks to build 80,000 affordable homes by 2015.
