Funding deal paves way for construction of new Glasgow college campus

City of Glasgow College has received funding to invest in a new state-of-the-art campus in the heart of the city.

The Scottish Funding Council has provided £193 million to support the development of the project, with an additional £5.67 million being invested by the college.

Two facilities will be built on existing college land in the city centre and on the banks of the River Clyde, with construction scheduled to begin in 2013.

Alex Neil, cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, claimed the new college campus will provide a boost to Scotland's economy.

"City of Glasgow College is an important part of our programme to stimulate growth and support jobs, and will be delivered through the Non-Profit Distributing model, which delivers better value for taxpayers than PFI [Private Finance Initiative]," he said.

The City of Glasgow College was created through the merger of three former city centre colleges in September 2010.
