Football ground to be turned into homes

Chesterfield FC's former home at Saltergate is to be turned into a housing development after a deal was agreed between the ground's owners and developers.

GB Development Solutions, which built the league one club's new 10,300-capacity B2Net stadium, has sold the property to Barratt Homes.

Barratt will now use the site to build 68 family homes of two, three and four bedrooms, in line with planning permission already secured for the development and work is expected to start this spring.

The move will be of benefit to the local community, according to the GB Group.

Martin Smout, chairman and chief executive of GB Group, said:  "We know that local people are really keen to see the site developed and the much needed provision of new homes that this will create."

The original stadium was opened back in 1871 and was used by the club until 2010, until it relocated to the new £13 million stadium.
