Friends of the Earth (FoE) has weighed into the wind farm debate by accusing the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) of getting its priorities wrong.
This week the CPRE claimed that the countryside is being "caught in a hurricane of new wind turbines" and wants the government to reform the planning process governing the location of wind farms.
However, FoE has hit back by claiming that, while it is important farms are "sensitively sited", the real threat to the countryside is climate change rather than wind turbines.
Head of campaigns at FoE Andrew Pendleton said: "One of the biggest threats to our countryside is climate change - and this is exactly what wind power can help defeat.
"It's time to stop tilting at windmills."
RenewableUK, which represents the wind energy industry, is adamant that the planning regulations currently in place are more than adequate.
It has also claimed that people in rural areas support wind energy more enthusiastically than those in towns and cities.
