Engineering Is Development examines the history of infrastructure and manufacturing development in Nigeria through the eyes of the Association of Consulting Engineers Nigeria, ACEN, and concludes that the lack of development in the country has been due to the governments not realising the strategic importance of science, technology, engineering and their inextricable links in all aspects of development, particularly its all too evident consequences in terms of the endemic poverty and chronic diseases.
This is typical of most sub-Saharan African countries. Its premise is that countries which have been unable to build capability and capacity in order to provide basic infrastructures and goods for their citizens over the years continue to rely on aid and imports.
This promotes unemployment and propagates poverty. The book postulates that infrastructure development and well being are critical to the successful entrenchment of other social values such as democracy, rule of law, peace and security.
