In her speech today (May 9th), the Queen announced that the UK electricity market is to be reformed to deliver "secure, clean and affordable electricity".
This will mean focussing on low-carbon power generation and see the introduction of an emissions performance standard to prevent construction of new coal plants, the Press Association reports.
Following the Queen's announcement, environmental groups have urged the government to seize the opportunity to go "green".
Friends of the Earth's executive director Andy Atkins told the news agency: "85 per cent of the public back moves to invest in clean British energy from the sun, sea and wind.
"The prime minister must honour his pledge to lead 'the greenest government ever' and seize this once-in-a-generation opportunity."
Yesterday, it was announced that the 76-turbine Pen Y Cymoedd farm in south Wales - which will have the highest generating capacity of any such facility in England and Wales - is to go ahead.
