Contractors have been awarded some £55 million worth of construction and engineering contracts to improve Scotland's rail infrastructure.
Morgan Sindall will construct a £25 million station at Haymarket in Edinburgh that will serve as a fully-accessible transport hub for train, tram, bus and tax services.
BamNuttal has signed on to a large £27 million bridgeworks contract that will see it removing and reconstructing a number of structures around the central belt. Meanwhile, Carillion has been tasked with delivering £3 million worth of track alterations in the same area.
These contracts were awarded by Network Rail, as part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP), a scheme that will see more than £1 billion of infrastructure work undertaken.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "The Scottish Government is committed to bringing tangible benefits to passengers across the country through projects such as EGIP. These works are a significant part of this and I look forward to witnessing the progress made."
EGIP, funded by Transport Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, will also see the electrification of 350km of track in the central belt, including the main Edinburgh Waverley-Glasgow Queen Street line.
The changes will not only allow for increased services, but also for reduced journey times between Scotland's two largest cities.
