Scottish transport minister Keith Brown is determined that the Borders Railway will be completed on time.
The project, which will see the reestablishment of passenger railway services from Edinburgh through Midlothian to Tweedbank in the Scottish Borders for the first time since 1969, is due to be completed in 2014.
It is hoped that the second coming of the railway will provide the area with an economic boost.
However, the project has been beset by delays and construction work is yet to begin after two of the three bidders on the scheme pulled out, the Scotsman reports.
Speaking to MSPs, Mr Brown said: "We have said to Network Rail we want to see this completed by the end of 2014 and done on budget.
"That's very much our intent."
Also in Scotland, there are plans afoot for a £14 million redevelopment of Dundee railway station.
The concourse revamp includes the provision of a hotel.
