EDF has been granted planning permission to build and operate a temporary sea jetty at Hinkley Point C on the Severn Estuary, where it is planning to build a new nuclear power station.
The jetty development comes in anticipation of planning permission being granted for the nuclear facility, with the company pledging to remove the structure and restore the area to its previous condition if the proposals are rejected.
Should the nuclear scheme go ahead, the jetty will be used to accept construction materials by boat, which will help to reduce the burden on the local road network - one sea-going alone can substitute for 250 HGVs.
"It will make a considerable contribution towards mitigating the impact of the station's construction on the local community and today's decisions mark another important step in the right direction," explained Richard Mayson, planning and external affairs director for EDF Energy Nuclear New Build.
