Decision due on £1.2bn nuclear civils package

A decision is due on which consortium will be granted the £1.2 billion civil engineering package to build the Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear facility in Somerset.

The new EDF facility is to be located at Hinkley Point on the Severn Estuary, approximately five miles from Bridgwater and the M5 to the south.

There are three consortia in the running for the project: Balfour/Vinci, O'Rourke/Bouygues and Costain/Sir Robert McAlpine/Hochtief.

It will create 1,500 construction jobs over a three year period, with work due to start on site early 2013, according to Construction Enquirer.

Hinkley Point has been identified by the government as one of eight possible locations for new nuclear power stations by 2025.

Richard Mayson, director of planning and external affairs at EDF Energy Nuclear New Build, said: "HPC will be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK making a major contribution towards meeting our future requirements for low carbon, affordable electricity."
