Minister of state for energy Charles Hendry has announced a number of regulatory reforms in the energy sector as part of the Red Tape Challenge.
In all, 86 regulations are being scrapped, while a further 48 have been improved - a move which the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) claims will save businesses an estimated £400 million over the next 20 years.
Among the regulations being addressed are the Offshore Chemicals Regulations 2002, the Modernisation of the Electricity (Compulsory Wayleaves) (Hearings Procedure) Rules 1967 and the Improvements to the Public Gas (Transporter Pipe-line Works (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations 1999.
"It is … vital that we have a regulatory regime which promotes fairness and consumer and environmental protection, but does not impose unnecessary costs or barriers," Mr Hendry said.
David Porter, chief executive of Energy UK, said he welcomed the measures being taken and urged the DECC to continue to address the issue.
