Contractor appointed for first phase of Kensington estate scheme

The first phase of a project to redevelop an estate in Kensington will begin early next year after Catalyst Housing appointed a contractor for the scheme.

The developer has confirmed that Ardmore Construction will begin construction work in January on the Portobello Square scheme - the initial stage of the Wornington Green Estate regeneration project.

Ardmore will deliver 324 new mixed tenure homes, 174 of which have been earmarked as affordable housing, as well as a public park and retail units.

Up to 1,000 new homes will be created following the redevelopment of the estate, which is located in the north of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The first of these homes will be ready for occupation in 2013.

Griff Marshalsay, director of Catalyst by Design, said: "From an outstanding short list, choosing Ardmore was based on a number of criteria including their experience and expertise in building high quality mixed tenure regeneration schemes in London.

"We are very pleased with the selection process outcome."
