The firms that will take charge of the build and operation of a new £800 million sustainable waste treatment facility on behalf of Essex County Council have been announced.
Essex Waste Partnership's Residual Waste Treatment Contract has gone to Balfour Beatty, who will build the facility, and Urbaser, who will run it once it is operational.
It will be a 30:70 venture, with Balfour Beatty putting up £7million in equity.
The 28-year public-private partnership (PPP) scheme will handle 417,000 tonnes of waste per annum once it is up and running and Balfour Beatty says the project will benefit the local community.
Its chief executive, Ian Tyler, said: "This project will provide a boost to the local economy through construction-related jobs and full-time employment and apprenticeship positions once the facility is operational."
The same two firms were also recently awarded Gloucestershire's 28-year residual waste project, which will see the creation of a new energy from waste facility on Javelin Park, near Gloucester.
