Construction starts on Olympic Park sculpture

Construction work has begun on a giant sculpture in the Olympic Park at Stratford, London.

The 'RUN' installation has been created by internationally-renowned artist Monica Bonvicini and when completed will be made up of three nine-metre-tall, ten-tonne letters forming the word 'run'.

It will take workers six weeks to erect the permanent structure, which will include energy efficient LED lighting.

RUN is going to be just one of several installations that will remain in place after the Olympics has finished and the Olympic Delivery Authority is hoping that the sculptures and other projects will give the site extended value.

The ODA says: "Our aim is to achieve a unique area that will give existing local communities a sense of ownership, attract new businesses, [and] create an area where new communities will want to live."

This week, the ODA announced that building work on the nine arenas on the site had been officially completed.
