Construction of police HQ set to commence next year

Construction is set to begin next year on a project to build brand new facilities for the West Yorkshire Police department.

Interserve fought off stiff competition from Balfour Beatty to be nominated as the preferred bidder for the £100 million contract to build two new headquarters, custody suites and a training centre in West Yorkshire.

The new divisional headquarters and custody facilities will be located at Elland Road in Leeds and Havertop Lane at Normanton.

Chair of West Yorkshire Police Authority, councillor Mark Burns-Williamson, is "delighted" that the Home Office and HM Treasury have granted permission for the project to go ahead and says that the development will benefit the local community.

"The successful bidder has also made firm commitments to maximise the positive impact on the local economy during the construction process and beyond, providing many construction jobs including commitments to provide 85 apprenticeships," he said.

West Yorkshire Police is responsible for policing 2.2 million people, split over five districts.
