Construction begins on south-west's first managed-motorway

Construction work is underway on the south-west's first ever managed-motorway scheme.

The £88.6 million project aims to increase capacity, reduce congestion and improve safety on the M4 and M5 motorways near Bristol thanks to the implementation of variable speed limits and the use of the hard shoulder as an extra lane.

Balfour Beatty is handling the work which began on Wednesday (January 25th) and is set for completion in 2014.

Paul Unwin, Highways Agency senior project manager, said: "In order to minimise delays to road users, we are carrying out this work in phases … and keeping three lanes available to traffic in both directions at peak times throughout the construction.

It is just one of 20 major road improvement projects that are planned as part of the government's £2.1 billion package of strategic road projects.

Balfour Beatty is one of four delivery partners that were awarded the managed motorway national framework contract.

The others are a BAM Nuttall / Morgan Sindall joint venture (bmJV), Carillion and a Costain / Serco joint venture.
