Planning consent is being sought for a 450MW wind farm to be built off the coast of Fife in Scotland.
The Neart na Gaoithe farm will occupy a site of 105 sq km and consist of between 64 and 125 turbines. Its 450MW capacity is enough to power 325,000 homes (3.7 per cent of Scotland's total demand).
Grid connection for the site was secured back in 2010 and an Agreement for Lease was reached with the Crown Estate in 2011. The new consultation will run until September, following which developer Mainstream Renewable Power hopes to reach financial close in 2013 and begin construction in 2015.
"This project is of strategic importance to Scotland; not only will it supply a significant percentage of the country’s electricity demand it will also help to deliver Scotland’s and the UK’s renewable energy targets in advance of 2020," explained the chief executive of Mainstream Renewable Power's Offshore Business, Andy Kinsella.
