Prime minister David Cameron has thrown his weight behind nuclear and wind energy.
In a speech on national infrastructure delivered at the Institute of Civil Engineering yesterday (March 19th), the prime minister said that Britain's existing energy infrastructure is out of date and reliant on polluting coal-fired power stations.
Stating that nuclear would forms the "backbone" of the UK's low-carbon future, Mr Cameron confirmed that the government would be working with the private sector to enable the expansion it wants to implement up to 2030.
Mr Cameron also said that the government would be focussing on offshore wind as the UK's main source of renewable power, despite opposition to wind energy from 100 members of his own party who have demanded subsidies should be cut.
"It is secure, it's generated at home rather than imported and it's one of the world’s fastest growing energy sources, which means substantial economic and export opportunities," he said.
