Cadbury factory to be turned into homes

The Cadbury factory site in Keynsham near Bristol has been sold to a housing developer.

Kraft, the company that now owns the chocolate maker, has sold the 220-acre site to Taylor Wimpey for an undisclosed fee.

The homebuilding firm will use the land to build properties including a primary school, a hotel and 700 homes, and the company says its vision for the £50 million project is clear.

Nigel Holland, managing director of Taylor Wimpey in Bristol, said: "The vision quite simply is to make the best use of the considerable assets on site".

He also added that the company is "committed" to working alongside the local community to deliver a build that "meets the needs of new and existing residents".

The Kraft takeover of Cadbury in January 2010 and its subsequent closing of the Somerdale factory - costing 400 workers their jobs - and shifting of operations to Poland caused much controversy and led to a House of Commons inquiry.
