Birmingham council looking for developer to build £35m science park

Birmingham City Council is looking for a developer to build new high-tech buildings at the Birmingham Science Park Aston.

The local authority has issued a formal tender notice on the Official Journal of the European Union website for a partner to oversee construction of a £35 million 'Digital Plaza' at the site.

The contract will include the construction of four buildings with a total floor space of 100,000 sq ft, with work on the first structure scheduled to begin in September 2012.

Dr David Hardman, chief executive of Birmingham Science Park Aston, claimed that the park will help meet the needs of the city's growing number of technology entrepreneurs.

He said: "The UK digital games sector is worth over £3.8 billion, which is bigger than our film or music industries. 25 per cent of digital gaming jobs are in the West Midlands and the Digital Plaza will act as a magnet for hundreds of new jobs for local people to be created in this dynamic industry.

"We are seeking a joint venture partner to help us to create a statement facility that will define Birmingham’s knowledge economy."

Interested bidders have until 23rd December to submit their proposals.
