BAM secures approval to build new community centre in Portsmouth

BAM Design has been granted planning permission to build a new community centre in Portsmouth by the local council.

The £10.4 million 'Hub' building, which spans over a dual carriageway, represents the first phase of the major regeneration of the inner city Somerstown area.

Councillor Steven Wylie, cabinet member for housing at Portsmouth City Council, labelled the project a "massive boost" in the local authority's bid to transform Somerstown into a thriving town.

He said: "The residents of Somerstown deserve top class facilities and this will be a building that they can be very proud of. It will make a real difference to the lives of people living in Somerstown."

BAM Design has been appointed concept architects and environmental engineers and is currently developing the details of the scheme with BAM South East.

Construction is due to commence in the summer of 2012 with completion earmarked for the end of 2013.
