Modern artist Damien Hirst, who is famous for works containing pickled animals, is now turning his hand to construction.
The North Devon Journal reports that Bristol-born Hirst is planning to build 500 eco-homes in Ilfracombe, Devon, on land he owns at Winsham Farm, as well as nearby Channel Farm and Bowden Farm.
His plans were announced by a representative, architect Mike Rundell of MRJ Rundell Associates, at a recent town meeting.
It was suggested that the homes would incorporate environmentally-friendly features such as photovoltaic panels, concealed wind turbines in the roofs and heat-saving insulation.
"[Mr Hirst] wants these buildings to be landmarks that will stand the test of time and create a blueprint for quality, environmentally-sustainable developments across the country," Mr Rundell told the meeting.
The success of the project is set to revolve around the terms of a section 106 agreement, which could enforce a level of affordability that forces down the overall quality of the buildings.
