ACE welcomes Terry Hill's appointment to lead civil engineering investigation

Issued: 29 June 2010

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) has welcomed the announcement that former Arup chairman Terry Hill is to lead the Government's investigation into the cost of civil engineering works.  He will be supported by an expert panel led by Peter Hansford, senior vice president of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

ACE has recommended some likely areas for the investigation to focus on.  These include standards of project management, workforce capacity and labour costs, the regulatory framework for construction, the speed and the quality of Government decision making.

The appointments mean that industry will be fully involved in the investigation process and will make it more likely that a balanced, and workable, set of conclusions will emerge.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: "The debate over best value in construction is an important one. It is crucial that the engineering industry and the Government engage fully and openly.  ACE will give full support possible to the investigation team to ensure that the wider consultancy and engineering industry can contribute to the investigation and its conclusions."
