The Association for Consultancy and Engineering has welcomed proposals from Alan Cook to move the Highways Agency towards five year funding packages.
The new report, entitled A Fresh Start for the Strategic Road Network, looks at how management, maintenance and development of the road network can be improved in the years ahead. A key proposal is to move the Highways Agency towards committed five year funding packages to avoid short term uncertainty that can disrupt planning.
Mike Llywelyn-Jones, chair of the ACE’s Roads Group, said: “Industry is keen to see greater certainty and a longer and more transparent pipeline in the roads sector. I was particularly pleased to see the move towards longer term, ring-fenced funding, as it is a concept I have personally been advocating for many years, as I am certain it will deliver greater efficiency in the roads sector. We will continue working to help the Highways Agency drive through this greater efficiency through greater certainty in their procurement.”
Mike Llywelyn-Jones added: “I was also pleased to see the value of the motorways and trunk roads to the country’s economy being recognised by Alan Cook – I hope that this, together with the growing recognition by Government that capital spending on infrastructure projects can benefit the economy in the short and longer terms, will result in a commensurate amount of roads sector funding going forward.”
