ACE welcomes interim report on low carbon construction

Issued: 17 March 2010

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) today welcomed the publication of the interim report of the new Low Carbon Construction Innovation and Growth Team (IGT).  Led by Paul Morrell, the chief construction adviser, the IGT has set out a series of recommendations to transform public and private sector construction projects in the UK.

The interim recommendations include: fundamental reform of procurement processes to drive low carbon construction; a greater emphasis on retrofit of existing buildings alongside low carbon new buildings; and a regulatory regime that recognises infrastructure’s role in the transition to a low carbon economy.  By the end of 2010 the IGT will have published its final set of recommendations.

Nelson Ogunshakin, ACE chief executive, said: “Today’s report is a wake-up call to industry and government to work together for a low carbon future.  Above all, industry must be prepared to take a greater role in leading the transition to a low carbon economy.  ACE looks forward to the opportunity for the consultancy and engineering sector to contribute to the IGT’s final report, and would urge all parties to begin to prepare for the future as described by the IGT.”

The IGT brings together key figures from industry, government, public and private sector developers.  ACE was pleased to have already contributed to this initial report by having the ACE chair, Michelle McDowell as a member of the IGT’s non-domestic buildings working group.
